Bertin Nahum, Founder & CEO, MedTech Surgical

Bertin-Nahum

Of Beninese origin, Bertin Nahum was born in 1969 in Senegal and grew up in France.

It is during his studies at the National Institute of Applied Sciences (INSA Lyon, France) that he affirms his vocation:

At the end of my studies, I was involved in the development of a software that could automatically read head injuries from scanners. This feeling of purpose inspired me to devote my career to patients, but on the technicians’ side, through the development of robots that would support surgeons during their procedures.

Following his engineering degree, he moves on to Coventry University (England), graduating with a Master of Science, before starting his career. During ten years he works for leading companies specialized in surgical robotics such as Computer Motion Inc. (cardiac surgery, urology, etc.), Integrated Surgical System Inc. (orthopedic surgery), and IMMI SA (neurosurgery).

Capitalizing on his experience, he decides to launch his own initiative, and in 2002, he sets up his own company specialized in surgical robotics: Medtech.

Ranked 4th Most innovative Entrepreneur in the World by the Canadian magazine, Discovery Series !

Just behind Steve Jobs, Marc Zuckerberg and James Cameron

It speaks for itself !!!

But as far as Bertin is concerned it is all about BRIGIT and ROSA

The loves of his life? His children? Not strictly speaking but ALMOST I assume !

BRIGIT and ROSA are the names of the 2 robots Bertin and his team invented for surgical assistance.

A little bit like the GPS for a surger as Bertin says.

Very impressive ! And a wonderful illustration of The French Tech and The French Touch !

So I am very proud to welcome Bertin Nahum on Frenchy ! And when Bertin goes through the #LFTConf questionnaire, we thank him a thousand times and it looks like this !

Bertin-Nahum2

Frenchy : Your favorite word ?
Bertin : Determination

Frenchy : What would you change if you had a magic wand ?
Bertin : I would change people’s mind to make them more positive or optimistic.

Frenchy : What is your favorite quote ?
Bertin : A quote of Confucius :

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.

Frenchy : What could seduce you immediately ?
Bertin : A stubborn person.

Frenchy : What is, according to you, the secret of happiness ?
Bertin : Love

Frenchy : If you were a dessert ?
Bertin : A molecular dessert: a destructured lemon pie.

Frenchy : What in your day to day life remains so French/American ?
Bertin : What remains so French, to drink a glass of good wine with cheese ;
And what remains American, is the language that I speak everyday with my employees.

Frenchy : What do you enjoy the most in the US/Fr way of life ?
Bertin : The thing that I enjoy in the US way of life, is the simplicity, Americans are relaxed, and they are open.

In the French way of life, I would say culture and creativity, the sense of innovation and attention to detail.

Frenchy : One thing where American/French people are particularly good at that you would like to develop yourself ?
Bertin : I think that I am already developing that…

As for American people, I am admiring their self-confidence, they are optimistic, everything is possible for American people.

Frenchy : In the US, failing is seen as the first step to be successful later, how to bring such a state of mind in France ?
Bertin : From my point of view, this should be part of education. Such a state of mind must be instilled in young children on one hand by every parents; and on the other hand by the overall French education system.

Frenchy : What is it to be a French/American guy in the US/Fr? Could you tell us a specific anecdote that happened to you ?
Bertin : The cultural gap leads sometimes to funny situation.

I was at a cash desk of a shop, and the cashier owed me 10 or 5 cents, and she didn’t have some change. And I told her that it was ok (for 5 cents, it was not that important). And she was so amazed, she was so grateful. I found her reaction very surprising.

Frenchy : A French / European GAFA could be possible if…?
Bertin : If legislation were less restrictive.

Frenchy : Who are the 3 entrepreneurs who most inspire you ?
Bertin :

Xavier Niel (Free)
Yulun Wang (InTouch Health)
Bill Gates (Microsoft)

Frenchy : The 3 most promising French/US start-ups, top of your head ?
Bertin :

Awox – French – Connected Technology
Carmat – French – Medical device
InTouch Health – American – Telemedicine

Frenchy : According to you, what is the French Touch ?
Bertin : The French Touch is French excellence. France has great strengths in terms of innovation, productivity, creativity and know-how; and these trumps must be promoted first in France and internationally.

Merci Bertin !
